Facilitator Bio's

Patrick J. Knapp – PhD,  Pastoral Psychology. Pat’s initial interest in religious abuse recovery stems from his own involvement in a Bible-based cultic group (1970-1984).  His recovery came as a result of individual and marriage counseling, in addition to several years of work in and facilitating of support/recovery groups for former members and friends and family. Since 1984 he has also been heavily involved in education, conference speaking and life-coaching for those interested in cultic studies. His MA (Philosophy of Religion) thesis (Fall 2000) was titled: "The Place of Mind-Control in the Cult Recovery Process". He has also completed 98 semester doctoral hours in Marriage and Family Counseling (Professional Track), at Gordon Conwell in Charlotte, NC. His PhD is from Graduate Theological Foundation http://www.gtfeducation.org and his doctoral thesis was titled "A Survey of Religious Abuse and Recovery." He is currently seeking a publisher for this unique manuscript.   

 

He has presented at ICSA conferences: “Nothing need go to waste,” a personal testimonial on the nature and recovery from involvement in a Bible-based cult, and “The Differences between Psychological and Spiritual Abuse: An Evangelical Perspective, " along with several formal papers.  For many years he has co-facilitated support/recovery groups for those affected by harmful religious environments and currently does so along with his wife (Heidi). He and his wife, reside in Littleton, Colorado.

Heidi I. Knapp – Colorado Addictions Counseling certification level II, In addition Heidi is a certified Life Coach, with three specialized certifications in Life Coaching. Heidi's work through Becoming Free is related to topics of study; Spiritual Abuse, Codependency, Healthy Boundaries for personal relationships, Stress Management and Skills for coping through crisis. She co-directs Becoming Free along-side her husband Pat with whom she co-facilitates support and recovery groups for those who have experienced spiritual abuse. Heidi contributes to the educational process of writing curriculum for these support and recovery groups.

 

Having personal experience with different aberrant Christian groups. Heidi has spent 20 years of education on recovery issues. She is a member of the International Cultic Studies Association, The American Association of Christian Counselors, and The International Christian Coaching Association. Additionally, Heidi has raised her son with special needs and previously coordinated and lead support groups for parents raising special needs children. Heidi and her husband currently reside in Littleton, Colorado.
